Last year – right after I finished my bachelor’s degree in communication design – I decided to go to Thailand for six months to check out if remote working (or digital nomadism as the cool kids say) is for me.
Now – six months is no life time but since I rarely left my home country for more than two weeks, it was a whole new experience for me. I was scared and excited at the same time. And I wanted to do it right, so I started to plan my departure as thoroughly as possible.
One thing I put very much thought into was what I would need to take with me. You can read about it in the article I wrote back then, if you are interested.
While going through all my stuff I realized there was not much that I needed really. And when it was time to move out of my apartment in Düsseldorf I found myself rigorously sorting out my belongings into piles of ‘Keep’, ‘Sell/Donate’ and ‘Throw away’. But still I ended up with tons of stuff that I stored at my parents’ home.
After I came back to Germany, I discovered even older boxes of stuff in the attic of my parents’ house. I was intrigued. I remembered that I had stored my valuables from before I moved out here and thought it might be interesting to have a look – only to find that I stored mostly garbage.
So I decided to go through my belongings yet another time and get rid of everything I wouldn’t need, which as of today is almost the entire contents of two boxes of ‘valuables’.
Here’s what I’m gonna do:
- I will pick one box of stored items every day and go through it. Contents will again be put into piles of ‘Keep’, ‘Sell/Donate’ and ‘Throw Away’.
- I will use stickers to mark items that I use on a daily basis. Stickers will have different colors and/or the date on it to make regular use visible.
- I will set up a box for important items like my passport, insurance card etc. This box is sacred and its contents – although maybe a burden – must be kept.
- I will set up a box for items with sentimental value. These can be pictures, drawings, letters, … – you get the gist. At the end I will go through its contents and decide on what is really worth keeping.
So this is it. I hope to drastically reduce the number of items I own and maybe I am lucky and can make a Euro here and there from some of the things I decided to keep. 😉
